While I have had the fortune of traveling to roughly 50 different countries and have encountered an array of experiences that can write their own stories. When I get asked what my favourite place is, it always seems to be the hardest question to answer. Mainly as there are so many incredible places I’ve visited, stubbles upon, or lived in that I really can’t pick one. But, even with that being said there are some that have stuck out more than others. And one of these countries was Montenegro. While planning a 2-week road trip through the Balkans with some friends I didn’t really know what to expect from Montenegro. I had heard about and seen pictures of the coastal areas, but didn’t have any idea what the place had to offer. For me what really stuck out to me was not only all the natural beauty it held, but how easy and quick it was to go from the crystal blue Adriatic coast to the mountains and the canyons.

Being that it is in the process of becoming apart of the EU there are real perks to visiting this small country. For starters the visa requirements are similar to other Schengen countries, and boarder control (even via land) is quite a breeze. They use the Euro so for those coming from the EU zone one less thing to stress about. Due to it working on becoming apart of the EU the roadways are in really good shape. But the part I really enjoyed the most on my visit was, while there is clearly tourist spots, the country seems relatively untouched compared to neighbouring Croatia and Greece.

As for what to do when in Montenegro there are so many options. A visit to Budva and Kotor should be on your list, including a quick hike up to the old fort and a boat ride to the blue lagoon. But if you’re wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle that these two highly visited cities head into the mountain/canyon area. No matter what the time of year it is, the mountains and canyon area offer something for everyone. From light hikes around black lake to white water rafting down the canyon and even skiing in the winter time. It truly is amazing how there are endless activities to do and how easy it is to escape into nature in the country.

Overall, while I would not Montenegro is my favourite place to visit (as I said I have too many), it would definitely be a place I would recommend everyone visit at least once.
