Located between Belgium, France, and Germany, this small country is mainly known for being the wealthiest country, in GDP terms, in the world, and home to the only country in the world with a sovereign grand dutchy. And while many venture to Luxembourg City, I headed to the countryside of the city where there you can find rolling hills and some small mountains to explore around.

The nicest of the areas is around Mullerthal, where there are three main circuits you can venture on and walk through gorges, spot unique rock formations, wander through forests, gaze at stunning views, and spend some time in nature. For our adventure we went as far East as we could to Echternach town where we opted to walk along the Route 2, which takes you through Wollefsschlucht, or Wolves' Canyon, continue along and pass stunning rock formations such as Perekop, narrow path that takes you to a look out over the valleys, and even walk through an area that has been dubbed the labyrinth. Our journey ended at the Huel Lee cave that was created to cut out millstone.

And while our adventure ended there, continuing forward you pass through Berdorf, where you can taste out some famous Berdorf cheese, can spot mills and cascades along your way back from the 38km hike. Even within the hike there are several areas you can vir off and take lunch on top of the gorges, get lost in the forest, or spot some nice views of the valleys below.

After a lovely day hike around the area we headed out towards Wiltz area, where we opted to stay the night in a cute cabin right outside of the city area, in Enscherange. While the city of Wiltz didn't have much to do when we were there, the area is worth a visit with loads of rolling hills and cute towns all around.

On the last day in the area we visited Esch-sur-sure, which is a pretty town on the base of the lake. It offers some great hikes, including one that over looks the city and even a castle perched on top in the city centre. But even if you want to continue to explore more the area there are several hikes around the lake that are worth checking out, with varying degrees of length, difficulty, and sites.

It definitely is a great place to check out for a mini trip and a nice way to escape city life and do some hikes. So the next time you are in the area or looking for a place to escape, consider hitting up the Luxembourg region.
